“Prevention, also known as preventive health, refers to actions taken to maintain health and well-being and to avoid or reduce the risk of poor health, illness, injury, and premature death. The goal of prevention is to enhance the chances that people remain healthy and well for as long as possible.”

Effective prevention reduces the risk of individuals experiencing diseases, conditions, or injuries. It also helps people manage existing diseases or conditions to prevent their health from deteriorating further.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the meaning of prevention as: “approaches and activities aimed at reducing the likelihood that a disease or disorder will affect an individual, interrupting or slowing the progress of the disorder or reducing disability”.

Lifestyle Counselling

Lifestyle counselling entails collaborating with a doctor, naturopath, or dietitian and a counsellor to pinpoint and tackle unhealthy habits, such as poor nutrition, insufficient exercise, and smoking. This form of counselling can guide individuals toward positive behavioural changes, thereby preventing chronic diseases and enhancing overall health and well-being.

Components of Lifestyle Counselling:

  • Nutrition Counselling: This involves working with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian to create a healthy eating plan tailored to an individual’s nutritional needs. It can help people make healthier food choices, manage weight, and prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
  • Stress Management Counselling: This type of counselling involves working with a healthcare provider or counsellor to create strategies for managing stress. It aids in lowering stress levels, improving mental health, and preventing chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes.
  • Sleep Counselling: Getting enough sleep is essential for good health. Adequate sleep is a foundation of health. Through individualised sleep hygiene support, various counselling techniques and assistance, this type of lifestyle counselling can improve your quality of life and reduce healthcare costs.
  • Exercise Counselling: In this module, individuals collaborate with a healthcare provider or exercise physiologist to develop an exercise regimen suited to their fitness level and health requirements. Exercise counselling aims to boost physical activity, manage weight, and prevent chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
  • Smoking Cessation Counselling: This involves partnering with your preventative health counsellor and your healthcare provider to devise a plan to quit smoking. It helps individuals stop smoking, reduce the risk of chronic diseases like lung cancer and heart disease, and enhance overall health and well-being.

Lifestyle counselling is customisable to fit an individual’s specific health needs and preferences. By adopting healthier lifestyle choices, individuals can prevent chronic diseases, improve overall health and well-being, and lower healthcare costs over time.
